About the Item

A Fine Louis XV Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Walnut and Bois Satiné Parquetry Writing Desk, ‘Bureau en Rognon’, By Maison Millet, Paris. The curved cartonnier with five drawers around a pigeon hold and surmounted by a cherubic figure holding a sword and seated on a lion-pelt. The clock with Roman numerals and brass hands, striking the hours and half hours on a bell. Flanked by scrolled foliate candelabra held by cherubs. The pull-out leather writing surface above three frieze drawers. The convex-shaped back and sides with trellis-parquetry and centred by foliate gilt-bronze mounts. On cabriole legs fronted by busts. Signed ‘MILLET A PARIS’. France, Circa 1900. This elegant writing desk exemplifies Maison Millet’s refined Louis XV revival production at the fin de siècle. The bureau en rognon model is particularly prized for its harmonious proportions, curvilinear form, and the richness of its figural and foliate gilt-bronze mounts, combined with the practical and decorative appeal of the surrounding cartonnier with integrated clock. The sculptural quality of the gilt-bronze cherub above the clock recalls the figural work of Léon Messagé, best known for his designs for François Linke. Messagé is documented as having worked for other leading Parisian makers, including Zwiener and Roux et Brunet, and is widely attributed as a designer for Millet. The Louis XV and Rococo vocabulary of this desk aligns closely with his decorative language. Millet produced several variations of this celebrated model; however, the present example is distinguished by its particularly elaborate candelabra supported by cherubs, a feature absent from simpler versions. A closely related bureau en rognon was exhibited by Théodore Millet at the 1905 Paris Salon des Industries du Mobilier, underscoring the model’s contemporary prestige. Maison Millet was established by Blaise Millet in 1853, and continued by his son Theodore until 1902 from premises at 11 rue Jacques-Coeur, Paris, before relocating to 23 boulevard Beaumarchais. Millet produced fine quality meubles de luxe, specialising in meubles et bronzes d'art, genre ancien et moderne, with an accent on the Louis XV and XVI styles. The firm's work covered a wide range of furniture, including authorised copies of eighteenth-century styles. Millet won awards in Paris and London including a gold medal at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle, a Grand Prix in 1900 and three further diplômes d'honneur and four médailles d'or. In 1902 the firm was authorised by the director of the Palace of Versailles to replicate Marie-Antoinette's celebrated Grand cabinet à bijoux. Maison Millet was an active client of François Linke.
