About the Item
Fully documented, this set represents an opportunity to own a piece of art deco history. The three pieces have been completely restored and are as exhibited in 1925.
Dufrene, who is one of the art deco period’s major designers and historians, studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs and in 1904 became a founding member of the Societe des Artistes Decorateours with whom he exhibited throughout his career. In 1921 he became artistic director of “La Maitrise”..
This ensemble, called “Goncourt” is of oak and mahogany decorated with ebony and purple heart wood. The desk top and chair seat are in black leather and the center bookcase door is beveled glass. The desk looks the same front and back...the front's drawer pulls out is the only difference. So desk becomes a "partner's" desk.
The desk measures 55” x 29” x 29” high, the bookcase is 64” x 17” x 64” high. The chair is 29” high.
