19th Century Pair Carved Bombe Dressers with Original Silvered Mirrors (4 pcs)

About the Item

A highly-ornate and graceful pair of late 19th century, elegantly hand-carved Rococo-style bombe mahogany dressers - a Gentleman’s highboy with two top drawers and three deep full-width drawers, and a Lady’s long dresser with three lingerie drawers and two deep full-width drawers. Dovetail joinery and wood drawer slides are the hallmarks of this fine furniture. The carving is primarily vines, leaves and arabesque decoration. Some elements depict the sea. Each carved drawer pull is in the shape of a shell, and each drawer features a different shell. Each dresser has an attachable, heavily carved, original silvered, beveled mirror. The highboy dresser is 38.25” wide, 25” deep and 45.75” tall. The pivoting mirror is 32.5” wide by 30.75” high, set into a 37.75” wide frame. The long dresser is 56.5” wide, 26.75” deep and 31.75” high. The long-dresser fixed mirror is 56” wide, 41.75” high and 2” deep. A set of original wood and brass feet are included for the lady’s dresser. They add 1.5” to the height of the dresser. The original key fits the locking drawers. These dressers have been in one New England family since their creation. According to the original owner, these dressers were made in France and imported to Boston. There are no obvious cabinet maker’s marks on the pieces and we have not been able to confirm origin. The dressers are unique, beautiful, structurally very good and highly useful as well as decorative.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. The original finish had aged to a dark purple over time. A master cabinetmaker carefully removed the old finish and put a natural lacquer finish over the refurbished carvings. One chip on surface of tall dresser, one on front of lady’s dresser.

Hand-crafted in Spain in the late 19th century, surmounted by the monumental dresser mirror with finely hand carved giltwood bird crest, atop flat mirror plates, framed by ornate scrolling foliates. Mounted over a mahogany bombe shaped chest accented with contrasting string banded inlay, gilded birds perched on stylized scrolled foliate, flanking four drawers.
