For your consideration is a rarely found Victorian era American chestnut dresser with Carrara marble slabs and original teardrop drawer pulls. This rare Victorian dresser, crafted from solid American chestnut with decorative veneer facings, is a treasure you won’t find again. While there may be many similar to it, this particular piece is unique in its construction. This dresser is not only functional but a valuable investment. Chestnut wood, prized for its durability, resistance to decay and beautiful grain, became functionally extinct after a blight in the early 1900s wiped out billions of trees. Pieces like this preserve the legacy of this extraordinary material. Topped with Carrara marble, it’s a true testament to timeless craftsmanship. Carrara marble was imported from Italy primarily in the 19th century during the Victorian era for high-end pieces such as this dresser. Tennessee and Vermont marble was also used during this period but had more muted earth tones opposed to the soft white of Carrara. Dating back to the late 1800s, this dresser features Knapp joints—an innovative scallop-and-dowel construction method used only between 1870 and 1890. Knapp joints were named after their inventor Charles Knapp of Wisconsin. For that reason, Knapp are rarely found outside of America. This detail helps us date the piece precisely to the height of the Victorian era (1837–1901), a time when ornate and durable furniture like this was highly prized. Victorian furniture is known for its intricate craftsmanship, with features like bold, solid construction, luxurious materials, and decorative accents like marble and carved wood. This dresser is no exception, showcasing a blend of elegance and functionality that defined the era. Condition:
Repaired: There was a piece of trim missing on the left side just above the marble slab. It was replaced and color matched to the existing finish seamlessly. Wear consistent with age and use. It has received a conservation on the finish as it was found. It is unknown whether or not the current finish is original. There are no structural issues and the drawers operate properly. The mirror has some mild discoloration but not silver loss.
