About the Item

A period George III (1760-1820) English oak kitchen dresser base with attractive mellow patina and interesting provenance! Originally the purpose of a dresser was to "dress" a meal in a more traditional, formal home. They were often found in either the kitchen or dining room. Similar to what we call a sideboard, server, or buffet today. Hand-crafted in England in the second half of the 18th century, with some later elements, displaying high quality craftsmanship and construction, large scale, well made and very heavy, crafted of warm rich solid oak with attractive grain detail, subtlety decorated with hand carved highly figured tiger oak panels and intricate cross-banding inlays to the nine drawer fronts. Having a long rectangular two board plank top, over conforming case fitted with two banks of four graduated drawers, flanking a single drawer over large cabinet door, rising on ogee bracket feet, adorned with later polished brass Batwing hardware, and later elaborate incised carving to the front and sides. circa 1770 Provenance / Acquisition: Property from the magnificent estate of the late T. Boone Pickens (b.1928 -2019). An American business magnate, financier, billionaire and philanthropist. The breadth of T. Boone Pickens' career is impressive. He built one of the largest independent natural gas oil companies in the United States and flourished as an entrepreneur thereafter, generating hundreds of billions of dollars in the process. Among his lengthy accolades, Time magazine has identified him one of its "100 Most Influential People", Financial World named him "CEO of the Decade" in 1989, and Oil and Gas Investor identified him as one of the "100 Most Influential People of the Petroleum Century." Acquired from the highly reputable auction house J. Garrett Auctioneers, Dallas, Texas. MORE of T. Boone Pickens' Estate catalog Dimensions: (approx) 39" High, 77" Wide, 22" Deep Condition Report: Good antique condition, especially considering its nearly 300 years old and traveled from a different country. Attractive appearance, beautifully aged heavily worn distressed patina with desirable mellow patina, rustic warmth and polished patina surface. Strong, sturdy, stable, structurally sound, with excellent presence, retaining original antique character throughout, wear consistent with age and use, including evidence of several old campaigns of restoration, top reattached with fill holes and age related splits, loss of one backboard, one bale handle lost, right corner foot with loss of front, scratches, nicks, splits, dark spots, nothing that detracts from the display or functionality, but only adds to the overall authenticity, elegant rustic warmth, sophisticated Georgian style, and rich historical depth that can only be acquired over very long periods of time!
