Model Furniture, Baroque dresser, 1750s. Made of walnut and other fine woods. A rare collector's item of high historical value. Pressed ball feet, double curved front with three drawers. Drawers and sides with fine ribbon and field marquetry. The model dresser has been completely restored, preserving its patina. What is model furniture? Since the Baroque period, cabinetmakers have produced model furniture with the purpose of providing the client with a tangible demonstration object and model for the large piece of furniture to be made. For many centuries, there was no mass production, but complex one-off productions or, at best, small series production. Even before the start of work on the actual furniture, it was possible to discuss the customer's wishes for changes and suggestions using the model. Considering how difficult, tedious and expensive communication and logistics were in the Baroque, Rococo, Biedermeier and Classicism periods, model furniture is a practical alternative. The fact that a cabinet maker made a model for a customer was often necessary due to distances and was offered by the cabinet makers for noble and aristocratic customers as a service included in the price. Although the model furniture is generally functional, it lost its purpose after the actual furniture was made and was often destroyed. This is why model furniture is extremely rare, represents an artistic value in itself and demonstrates the living culture of past centuries. Due to their appealing, small size, they can be used in the context of a modern interior as decoration, jewelry boxes, for storing coins or watches, or any small object.
