About the Item

Designated as a classic example of mid-century modern craftsmanship, this Paul Frankl "Station Wagon" Tall 6 Drawer Dresser was produced by Johnson Furniture Co. It exemplifies Frankl's signature style—clean lines, functional form, and timeless appeal. The cabinet is stamped Johnson Furniture on the inside of a drawer and the Johnson Furniture Co. model number and the remnant of a paper tag attached to an upper corner on the back (see photos) Crafted with high-quality materials, Philippine mahogany veneer, rock maple and stitched leather drawer pulls mounted on brass supports, this piece offers both aesthetic beauty and practical storage, making it a versatile addition to any sophisticated interior. The History and Significance of the "Station Wagon" Line: Paul Frankl's "Station Wagon" series introduced in 1950, featured in a House Beautiful article in May of that year reflecting his innovative approach to combining functionality with modernist aesthetics. Inspired by the streamlined forms of contemporary automobiles, this line introduced a fresh perspective to American furniture design, emphasizing clean lines, integrated hardware, and balanced proportions. Johnson Furniture Co. was a reputable manufacturer located in Grand Rapids, Michigan that produced five separate furniture lines of Frankl’s innovative designs, making this piece not just functional furniture but a collectible icon that embodies mid-century modern ideals. Restored in very good condition.
