About the Item

A stunning and rare matched pair of four-drawer chests designed by Eliel Saarinen and his daughter Pipsan Saarinen Swanson for the Johnson Furniture Company, circa 1940s. Exemplifying the refined elegance of early American modernism, these chests feature clean architectural lines, warm golden maple veneers, and signature overscaled wooden drawer pulls capped in distinctive brushed metal ends. Both pieces rest on recessed plinth bases, giving them a floating effect that enhances their visual lightness. The drawer faces are beautifully grained, highlighting the craftsmanship and attention to detail for which Johnson Furniture was renowned. The design bridges Saarinen’s classical architectural sensibility with Pipsan’s Scandinavian-influenced modernism, making these chests both functional and timeless. Perfect for use as bedroom storage, living room credenzas, or statement hallway pieces, these chests represent a rare collaboration between two of the 20th century’s most influential design figures.
