About the Item
A sculptural and expressive piece, this 1970s bar cabinet is crafted in the Brutalist style and evokes the spirit of the iconic ‘Torino’ series by Belgian designer Frans Defour. With its deep relief carvings and monolithic presence, it belongs to a lineage of furniture that treated cabinetry as architectural expression.
Design
The four carved doors each feature a pronounced circular motif, contrasting against the cabinet’s otherwise angular structure. This repetition of bold geometries recalls the design vocabulary of Defour’s Torino pieces, where rhythmic surface pattern and robust materials define the aesthetic. Carved in dark-stained oak, the façade creates a graphic interplay of shadow and texture. An open central compartment divides the cabinet horizontally, offering both display and practical access.
The upper section is fitted with an internal light and mirrored backing, making it suited for use as a bar. A brushed metal trim along the top edge adds a restrained touch of contrast to the otherwise matte, textured surface. Resting on a recessed plinth, the cabinet has a grounded but floating feel.
Though the exact maker remains unidentified, this piece strongly echoes Belgian Brutalist production of the 1970s, particularly in the tradition of De Coene and Defour. Its expressive carved detailing and architectural balance suggest it may be an anonymous production inspired by the Torino line.
Condition
The cabinet is in good vintage condition. Light wear is visible on the wood surfaces consistent with age. The internal lighting is operational.
