About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale This icebox, crafted in the 1880s by the Alaskan Refrigerator Company, which hails from Muskegon, Michigan. It features two original doors adorned with cast brass hinges and door catches. The interior is lined with zinc and the entire piece is raised on casters for easy mobility. A brass maker's plaque on the front proudly commemorates its heritage. The Alaskan Refrigerator Company was established in Michigan City, Indiana in 1878 and relocated to Muskegon in 1891 after receiving support from the Muskegon Improvement Company. By then, it had become the largest manufacturer of residential iceboxes, producing an astonishing forty-two large trains filled with four thousand units annually by 1892. This antique icebox can still be utilised as a functional icebox or larder. We have placed removable wooden planks over the zinc panels for enhanced usability; they are not adhered, so they can be easily taken out if desired. The previous owner cleverly converted it into a cupboard. It serves as a fascinating collectible piece that can be used for decoration or practical purposes! Please carefully examine the pictures to see the condition before purchasing, as they form part of the description. If you have any questions, please message us.
