About the Item
Multi-functional rolling cabinet that is an outstanding example of the Swedish Grace (Art Deco) movement, embodying functional beauty and exquisite craftsmanship. This style of furniture was historically referred to in Sweden as a "Rökbord" (smoking table), a fixture found in the smartest homes and offices of the era. Recently restored to a flawless condition, this piece is ready to serve as an unique end table, bookcase, and bar cart in your home.
Cabinet is attributed to Mjölby Intarsia, a highly renowned Swedish furniture workshop located in Mjölby, Östergötland, Sweden. The company defined the decorative aesthetic of the era (c. 1930). The masterful intarsia design is stylistically consistent with the work of Mjölby Intarsia's leading artists of the era, such as Erik Mattsson and Birger Ekman. The top features stunning Intarsia (inlay) work of exotic hardwoods such as zebra wood and jacaranda, set into radiant Golden Flame Birch veneer, framed by rich Golden Elm. The case, shelves, and doors are finished in matching Golden Elm.
This design perfectly embodies the Swedish Grace style, which flourished in the 1920s. Characterized by elegant lines and fine materials, it served as Sweden's refined expression of Art Deco. By the 1930s, this style evolved, incorporating the clean, practical lines of Functionalism (known in Sweden as “Funkis”), resulting in highly useful and beautiful pieces like this cabinet.
This ingenious design serves three distinct functions:
1. End Table or Bookcase: One side features two beautifully finished open shelves for display and a perfect table top for a lamp. The height works well beside a sofa or chair.
2. Hidden Bar Cart: The opposite side has doors with new brass ring pulls, opening to dedicated liquor storage. The interior includes ample clever birch bottle/glass holders, providing secure storage for your prized whiskey or cognac collection.
3. Service Trolley: The entire piece glides on new brass and rubber smooth-gliding (almost hidden) casters, making it a versatile serving trolley / bar cart or end table.
The cabinet has been professionally restored with new hardware and magnetic catches, highlighting the natural beauty of the inlaid wood and ensuring its lasting function and elegance.
