The cabinet’s centralized glass door is flanked by thick spiraling Solomonic columns surmounting a lower drawer. To the rear of the cabinet, the motif repeats in an eloquent display of perspectival treatment. The overall work is supported by a tiered base, elegantly conceived, and the cabinet is topped by a handsome pediment flanked by square plinths crested by gilt metal finials and an openwork frieze.
The cabinet’s tempered and moderate form suggests an origin probably during the first decade or quarter of the 18th century. Although utilitarian in concept, the reserved and sublime expressiveness of this cabinet is managed with a quality and care respective of the influence of Florentine ebony cabinetry work conceived in the Galleria dei lavori or Grand Ducal Workshops of the 18th century Medici dynasty. This architectural curiosity cabinet is a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of European craftsmen from the early 19th century. The highly figured quilted wood grain, warm rich burled walnut panels, and hand sculpted and molded ebonized wood exterior boasts a dark, lustrous sheen, while delicate hand carved details adorn its surface, showcasing the finesse and precision of its creator.
Probably Southern Germany, most likely Augsburg, having a rectangular raised top with visible hand cut dovetail joint case housing a single drawer, over exquisite stepped moulded ebony transition into large double door cabinet with the original hand forged iron hardware, opening to reveal an interior fitted with eleven drawers surrounding a single locking cupboard door, unlocking to reveal a stunning eight-pointed star marquetry inlaid spring loaded niche panel with hidden release, when triggered the niche slides out to reveal a trio of hidden storage compartments, including a deep bin and two small hidden drawers for the owners most precious valuables. An exceptional French antique Napoleon III inlaid ebonized & ormolu mounted marble top secretaire chest, circa 1860.
This superb antique French secretaire abattant has a black & white veined marble top, with a reverse breakfront gilded bronze frieze below, the front of the secretaire is very finely inlaid with Mother-of-Pearl & gilt bronze 'rope twist' decoration. The chest has eight drawer fronts with gilded cast bronze garland decorated lock escutcheons, three of the drawers are dummy & form the fall front for the pull down secretary, which has the original blue velvet writing surface and engraved lock-plate. The interior is made of the finest flame grained satinwood and has two drawers with lozenge shaped inlay, the top of the chest with a pair of very finely cast gilt bronze caryatid brackets, the base with a corresponding pair of gilt bronze acanthus shaped brackets. The secretaire is raised on turned bun feet with gilt bronze mounts and a shaped skirt also with a gilt bronze mount, the sides of the chest with inlaid bronze stringing.
