About the Item

Crafted in Bordeaux, France circa 1760, this exceptional “secrétaire à abattant” with upper display cabinet is built in two sections. The upper portion features a graceful arched bonnet cornice with central shell cartouche, above two serpentine doors finely carved with floral and foliate motifs. The doors are fitted with original chicken wire panels revealing interior display shelving with three scalloped-edge shelves. The lower section includes a slanted fall-front desk decorated with inlaid star marquetry, opening to a flat writing surface and a beautifully arranged theater interior with six drawers surrounding a carved central tabernacle door. Below, three bombe drawers retain their original bronze handles and escutcheons, framed by paneled serpentine sides. The piece is raised on a scalloped apron centered with a carved shell motif and elegant scroll feet. This important Louis XV period secrétaire is in exceptional condition, boasting its original hardware, warm walnut patina, and exquisite craftsmanship throughout.
