About the Item

This handsome George III slant-front bureau, dating to the late 18th century (circa 1780), is a quintessential example of English provincial craftsmanship. Constructed from solid oak with striking quartersawn grain (medullary rays) visible on the fall-front, this piece offers a perfect blend of historic character and modern utility. The desk opens to reveal a beautifully fitted interior gallery featuring a central prospect door, a series of pigeonholes, and small stationery drawers. The lower cabinet provides amble storage with a classic two-over two drawer configuration, accented by traditional brass "batwing" pulls and escutcheons. The piece displays excellent period joinery, including wide, hand-cut dovetails and original wide-plank backboards. It sits on its original bracket feet, maintaining a sturdy and dignified silhouette.
