About the Item
18th Century, Italian Neoclassical Marquetry Wood Secretary
Dimensions: cm H 143 x W 97 x D 40. Depth with the drop-down door open 90 cm. Writing desk height 75 cm.
This elegant secretary desk was made in Piedmont, Italy, during the Neoclassical period, in the second half of the 18th century. It is crafted in veneered and marquetry wood and consists of two parts. The upper portion features a wavy under-the-top band, decorated with geometric inlays made of three different types of wood in rhombus shape. When assembled together, they create a three-dimensional cube pattern that is repeated. The inlays are made of dark wood, rosewood, and boxwood. At the top there is a secret drawer hidden beneath the band. The front, veneered in dark wood, has a drop-down door decorated with inlays that create overlapping circles. Within the interior spaces, floral inlays in green wood are featured. At the center of the door is an inlaid shield with a heraldic family crest and the initials V. B. Upon opening the drop-down door, the space is divided into open compartments and seven drawers. The interiors are veneered in rosewood and bordered in dark wood. The surface created, which can be used as a writing desk, is covered with modern leather. The lower portion of the secretary features geometric inlays in the shape of cubes on two doors, which conceal, once opened, a compartment divided by a shelf.
The sides, veneered in dark wood, feature two panels with geometric inlays that repeat the design of the under-the-top band and central doors. The lower band of the secretary is wavy, bordered in boxwood, which enhances the brightness and creates small curls. The legs, continuing from the band, are curved and wavy.
This secretary is highly decorative thanks to the skillful chromatic play created by the combination of different wood types. Elegant and refined, it can be paired with both antique and modern furniture and placed in various environments such as entrances, living rooms, studies, and bedrooms.

Neoclassical Marquetry Bureau De Dame in the Style of Giuseppe Maggiolini, Italy
Located in Dallas, TX
Italian Neoclassical style freestanding slant front desk, in the manner of Giuseppe Maggiolini, late 19th c. Exquisite marquetry veneer in rosewood, satinwood and other decorative woods. The rectangular top with inlaid marquetry foliate sits above a sloping fall front centered by a foliate cartouche and corner cartouches, the kneehole. Open to reveal a nicely fitted interior with an arrangement of open compartments flanked by two short drawers and an inlaid hinged writing surface. Below this there are two large graduated drawers. Side panels inlaid with conforming scrollwork all rising on four elegant squared tapering legs finished with the original brass castor cups.
The shape and the inlaid designs are similar to those on pieces of furniture produced by Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738-1814), the foremost cabinet-maker in late 18th-century Milan. Maggiolini and his workshop specialized in marquetry scenes inspired by antiquity, based on drawings by late 18th-century artists and designers such as Andrea...
