Biedermeier secretaire Germany (Brandenburg) Ash Biedermeier, circa 1840 Dimensions: H x W x D: 199 x 105 x 51 (99) cm. Description: Ash veneered on softwood. Front when closed with three drawers at the bottom, the writing flap and a head drawer above the flap. Above it is the single-door attachment, the so-called "hat box". Regionally typical thread inlays on the entire furniture front and also on the interior. The cabinet consists of ten drawers, one of which is a secret compartment and can only be opened by a secret mechanism. In the center we find an open compartment with half columns attached to the sides. A mirror on the back extends the column optically. Handles and keyhole mounts in bone, four handles in wood with mother of pearl inlay. Beautiful, continuous and perfectly mirrored grain pattern over the entire furniture front. The curved head end is easily removable, so that the head end is straight. Condition: Restored ready to use. Shellac polish. You will receive a detailed expertise on the furniture. Comparable objects can be found in the reference book: Rainer Haaff - Biedermeier worlds p. 140 Some informations about the Biedermeier period: The Biedermeier era developed almost at the same time as the Empire and so we find numerous parallels in the design language. Both epochs were characterized by a strictly classicistic and straightforward basic form. Precious woods such as cherry or mahogany, which was very expensive at the time, were popular in both epochs. Walnut, ash, birch and all kinds of fruit woods were also popular. In Biedermeier furniture construction, attention is paid to straight lines and a strictly cubist design. Decorative elements are largely dispensed with, even the geometric fields of the previous Louis XVI era give way in favor of flatness. Carefully selected and mirrored veneers now ensure the design of the surface. Sparsely attached pillars and recessed key plates made of ebony loosen up the flatness. The formal language of the Biedermeier period spread throughout Central Europe from circa 1800. We find Biedermeier furniture in regionally different variations in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Hungary, as well as in the Scandinavian region. We call the transition phase to historicism, beginning from the 1840s, the late Biedermeier or Louis-Philippe epoche. In the middle of the 19th century, the strict cubist lines of the Biedermeier were supplemented by more playful shapes and ultimately replaced entirely. Some informations about ashwood: ashwood is ring-shaped and coarse-pored just like oakwood, and because the trunk usually grows straight and has few knots, the structure is simple and straightforward. There are only few color differences within the trunk. Due to its simplicity, the trunk wood has rarely been used to design entire furniture fronts. Because of its good elasticity it was rather used for chairs or parquet floors. In the Baroque period the wood of light coloured ash, contrasting mostly with walnut or ebony, was used for marquetry works. At the time of the Biedermeier era, ash came into fashion in Northern and Central Europe, because, unlike the trunk wood, the burl or root wood of ash is perfectly suited for the decoration of cupboards, secretaries and chests of drawers and was used as a mirrored processed veneer. A good shellac polish "fires up" the wood, i.e. the structure of the wood becomes more distinct, the faint colors become strong and warm. The ashwood used at the time of our antique furniture came from the region where the furniture was made.
