About the Item

19th Century Country French Louis XVI secretary is a truly astonishing work of the cabinetmaker's art! Hand-crafted from solid old-growth indigenous oak, it features a slim profile that extends out from the wall only sixteen inches, yet with the slant-front desk opened onto the pull-out supports, provides ample surface for a writing desk or laptop workstation! A shallow top above the slant-front enables one to decorate or park books if desired. The slant-front panel itself is a framed work of art, depicting elaborate foliates in full relief. A highly detailed cast bronze key guard provides a finishing touch. Just below is a fluted panel centered with an exquisite sunflower rosette. Below that is the full-width drawer which is carved to match the slant-front panel above, also fitted with a matching bronze key guard. Below the drawer is a fluted apron shaped to resemble an archer's bow, adorned with laurel garlands suspended from a carved ribbon mount. The rounded, fluted reeded cornerposts blend into the elegant cabriole legs to provide support. Even the side panels are enhanced with raised panels and finely executed molded frameworks. The interior of the desk area provides interior shelving, one cubby hole and five drawers with fluted facades and brass knobs. Circa 1880s Measures 38.5H x 37.5W x 16D; surface 25H.
