Important Viennese Biedermeier Secretaire. Walnut, Vienna, circa 1825
This important and highly refined Viennese Biedermeier secretaire, executed in Vienna circa 1825, represents an outstanding example of early 19th-century Austrian cabinetmaking at its highest artistic and technical level.
Viennese Biedermeier furniture is distinguished by its clarity of form, disciplined proportions, and architectural restraint, qualities that mark the transition toward modern design principles. This secretaire exemplifies these ideals with exceptional purity, balance, and sophistication.
The interior is conceived as an architectural composition, featuring a rare mirrored maple gallery, seven finely proportioned drawers, and five concealed secret compartments, executed with remarkable precision. The writing surface is framed by ebonized Doric columns, an uncommon and highly refined classical reference that elevates the piece beyond standard Biedermeier production.
The exterior is veneered in exceptionally fine, book-matched walnut, selected for its dramatic figure and depth. Viennese Biedermeier is distinguished by their sophisticated proportions, rare and refined design and excellent craftsmanship and continue to have a great influence on modern design.
The piece have beautiful highly figured walnut veneer and fine details with lovely light deep amber color and 200 years old patina.
The brass hardware, lock and the key are original. It has the original antique glass with tiny bubbles and irregularities. it's amazing that these glass windows have lasted two centuries.
