About the Item
Decorate an office or bedroom with this elegant antique secrétaire à abattant. Crafted in Paris circa 1870, the tall cabinet is built of walnut veneer and stands on cabriole legs ending with bronze sabots over a scalloped apron centered with an ornate gilt bronze mount. The piece features serpentine sides, exquisite parquetry and floral marquetry motifs across the front, and decorative gilt bronze ormolu mounts at the shoulders and feet. The slant front drops down to reveal a fitted interior with six small drawers, a large drawer at the base, two hidden drawers on the sides, and an open compartment for papers or correspondence. The writing surface is dressed with the original tooled green leather.
The secrétaire is topped with its original variegated Breccia marble, showcasing rich pink and gold veining with molded edge detail. Below the fall front, three large drawers provide additional storage. The piece retains all its bronze hardware and a functioning key.
This Parisian writing cabinet is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, featuring a rich, warm walnut patina and refined craftsmanship throughout. A functional and elegant addition to a study, bedroom, or library, the desk folds neatly when not in use, maintaining a clean, graceful silhouette.
