19th century George lll Style Butler's Secretary. This fine deep mahogany colored desk is simply stunning having Dentil molding above Mullion glazed doors sitting atop a desk and chest of drawers. In a desirable rich deep colored mahogany finish, this stately drop front butler's secretary features an upper bookcase shelved area having mullion bubble glazed doors with dentil moldings up-top. The door veneers are quartered in an exquisitely done conch mahogany. The bottom secretary flips open onto a sturdy writing surface having a tooled leather top in front of several open compartments flanked by small drawers on each side. The bottom having two smaller over two lower graduating drawers. The whole supported by bracket feet. This stunning chest appears to be all original with its original hardware. Open desk measurement: 8" H, 39" W, 20" D. The original Georgian style broadly references a period of design that spanned the reign of four British monarchs, from George I to George IV, who ruled during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Because the period occurred both in the British colonies in America as well as in Britain, the Georgian aesthetic is rather variable, but generally exhibits many of the canonical facets of neoclassical design, such as overarching symmetry, clean lines and classical Greek and Roman themes and motifs. Georgian decorative arts are particularly recognizable and desirable, and include the eloquent pottery designs by Josiah Wedgwood, and the exquisite craftsmanship and silhouettes of Thomas Chippendale, Thomas Sheraton and William Kent. Ultimately, Georgian pieces convey a sense of refined formality and sophisticated comfort ESH.
