Biedermeier secretary Southern Germany cherry tree, walnut tree Biedermeier circa 1820-1830 Description: Writing furniture standing on solid block feet. Cherrywood veneered on softwood. Inlaid ebony keyhole fittings in diamond shape. Very strictly straight-line front with three drawers at the bottom, the writing flap above, another drawer and the recessed head drawer. The interior is a central compartment with a mirrored back and an inlaid bottom. To the left and right of it four drawers each, as well as a wider drawer as the upper end. Walnut interior with a select beautiful grain pattern. Worth knowing: The "Secretary" type of furniture, as you see it here, was very popular in the Biedermeier era. Still in the Baroque and classicism period, mainly roller and sloping flap secretaries were built. The Classic form of the standing secretary, also called a writing cabinet, was only developed in the late 18th century. Comparable objects can be found in the technical literature: Rainer Haaff - Biedermeier Welten p. 115 Wolfgang L. Eller - Biedermeier Möbel p. 210 Good to know: In the case of antique European furniture, a distinction is first and foremost made between solid wood furniture and veneered furniture. The solid woods are divided into softwoods - e.g. spruce or pine; hardwoods - usually oak; and precious woods - e.g. cherry, walnut or mahogany. The most widespread solid wood furniture in Germany was made of softwood or oak. However, there are also antiques made of solid precious woods, such as furniture made of solid cherry or walnut, which often come from France, or furniture made of solid birch, which was mainly manufactured in Scandinavia. Every antique veneered piece of furniture is of course based on solid wood.This means that the base material for the veneer that was later glued on was of course solid wood, e.g. oak or pine. Many pieces of furniture are veneered with European woods like ash, cherry or birch, but also the expensive tropical woods like mahogany or rosewood were very popular. By means of the types of wood used and their combinations with each other, the region where the furniture comes from can be determined. Of course there are exceptions, but a furniture, mahogany veneered on oak, probably comes more from the North German or Dutch region. Walnut veneered on spruce was more common in southern Germany or Austria. A cabinet made of solid chestnut wood tends to point to France, solid ornamental pine rather to the Alpine region. Furniture made of birch often originates from Northern Europe. All these assessments must also be in line with design features, craftsmanship and the construction of the furniture, which is customary for the region, in order to be able to determine the region.
