Biedermeier secretaire with beautiful patina Brunswick - Berlin Birch Biedermeier around 1830 Dimensions: H x W x D: 200 x 110 x 54 cm Description: Architecturally constructed writing furniture of absolutely masterful quality. On block feet standing top secretary with three drawers in the lower area, the lowest typical for the time and region slightly protruding. Above is the writing flap and another wide drawer. Two three-quarter columns on the outside emphasize the overall architectural impression of the furniture. Delimited by a multiple profiled and stepped entablature, we see the single-door top, the so-called hatbox, at the top. The slightly curved central door is flanked by a total of four thin columns. These support the cornice, which, elaborated as a central risalit and with a final Schinkel roof, forms the upper conclusion of the secretary. The closed view of the piece of furniture appears coherent and self-contained thanks to a cleanly mirrored birch veneer, fine thread inlays of ebony and restrained, light-colored keyhole surrounds. In contrast to the simple exterior is the spectacular interior. Here we see, in mahogany and birch veneer, a central door with surrounding drawers and a pull-out leather-covered writing surface at the bottom. The top drawer is visually divided into three parts with a central recessed arch. The arch is designed by fan-like arranged and fire shaded woods. The interior has also been geometrically fielded with fine lines on the fronts. The light colored pull knobs are deliberately contrasted here and contribute significantly to the design of the interior. Facts to know: This secretary fits by its design into the masterpiece ordinance as it had come into effect in Brunswick from 1814. If the early master designs before 1820 seemed a bit heavier, this secretary with its columns, slender proportions and rich interior is typical for the years 1825-1835 [cf. Franz-Josef Christiani - Schreibmöbelentwürfe zu Meisterstücken Braunschweiger Tischler aus der 1. Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts]. Similarly designed writing furniture is known from Brandenburg and Berlin. Condition: Restored and authentic condition. Beautiful age patina. Shellac polished surface. The drawers run well and smoothly, the writing surface is stable at right angles to the body. Comparable pieces of furniture can be found in the following reference books: Franz-Josef Christiani - Schreibmöbelentwürfe zu Meisterstücken Braunschweiger Tischler aus der 1. Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts p. 140, 141 Wolfgang L. Eller - Schreibmöbel 1700-1850 p. 384.
