About the Item
Beautiful Danish Rococo secretary desk executed in the manner of cabinetmaker Mathias Ortmann (1692–1757).
The piece features an attractive, slightly dusty blue paint with fine patina, and features gilded bronze mounts that form a refined contrast to the painted surface.
The secretary is constructed in two sections:
The upper section has a shaped top with a profiled, broken cornice in a slightly darker blue tone than the rest of the piece.
At the center is a carved wooden ornament in the form of stylised foliage.
The pair of shaped panel doors follow the curved outline and are finished with profiled mouldings in the same darker blue tone.
The interior contains shelves and two small drawers, all painted in a lighter blue colour.
The lower section is bombé-shaped with three large, gently shaped drawers and a slanted writing flap. Behind the flap is a stepped interior fitted with small curved drawers and a central mirrored compartment. This interior is also painted in a lighter blue tone and displays characteristic Rococo detailing. Below the writing flap is an additional small, shallow drawer.
The sides of the lower section are elegantly formed with sweeping curved lines.
A fine detail is the carved lower apron, decorated with fluting and diagonal ribbon motifs with bows.
The secretary stands on small, shaped Rococo legs with scrolled (volute) feet and ribbed collars.
A beautiful and well-proportioned piece in good, conserved and restored condition, with an appearance closely aligned with the Ortmann tradition.
