About the Item
This Federal Cherrywood Bureau cabinet dates to 1790. It is a beautifully preserved example of early American Federal craftsmanship. The piece combines graceful proportions, warm patinated surfaces, and practical interior storage--embodying both the elegance and utility priced during the early Federal period. The upper section features paneled cabinet doors with original or period appropriate brass escutcheons opening to generous interior storage. Below, the slant-front desk folds down to reveal a richly finished writing surface surrounded by an arrangement of small drawers, pigeonholes, and cubbies. The lower case consists of four graduated drawers, each retaining its handsome oval brass pulls and original keyhole surrounds. The cabinet stands on shaped French feet with a delicately scalloped apron, lending a lightness to the otherwise robust form. Made of solid cherrywood throughout, the surface has developed a rich, warm tone that only centuries of careful use can create.
