About the Item

Fine Early 18th Century Queen Anne Burl Walnut Secretary Bookcase English Queen Anne Period Burl Walnut Secretary Desk and Bookcase, circa 1710 A fine 18th century English Queen Anne-period furnishings such as this walnut secretary are incredibly rare and important examples of English cabinetmaking, all original. This secretary is of the most outstanding calibre, boasting desirable double bonnet, mirrored cabinet doors, bracket feet and its original wood writing surface. The interior is skillfully constructed with a choice of compartments in which to hide one’s important documents and valuables. A superb early 18th-century burl walnut secretary bookcase of exceptional craftsmanship. This elegant two-part secretaire features richly figured walnut veneers, beautifully matched and symmetrically laid, creating a warm and highly decorative surface throughout. The complexity of its construction—combining a mirrored upper bookcase, a fall-front writing section, and a lower two-door cabinet—reflects the work of a highly skilled cabinetmaker. Its original brass locks and several original pulls further enhance its authenticity and desirability. The upper section is fitted with its original period mercury-glass mirrors, now displaying the softly aged, beautifully mottled patina that collectors prize. The fall-front opens to reveal a writing surface and interior storage (if you want, I can expand this with details once we see the inside). Below, two paneled cabinet doors offer additional storage and are framed by well-carved moldings typical of the Queen Anne and late William Mary transitional aesthetic. Secretary bookcases, or secrétaires, emerged in the early 1700s as some of the most innovative and luxurious pieces of writing furniture of their time. Among affluent households, they quickly became favored for their practicality, elegance, and imposing presence. As literacy and travel expanded during the 18th century, these secretaries evolved into the intellectual focal point of the home—symbols of refinement, education, and worldly sophistication. This handsome example—with its warm walnut tones, original fittings, and beautifully aged mirror panels—stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of early 18th-century craftsmanship. It will enrich any interior with traditional, country-house, rustic, or English manor–style character.
