About the Item

An exceptional and early Art Deco console by Jules Leleu, dating from the early 1920s — a period marking the full emergence of Leleu’s mature decorative style. Presented at a time when French modernism was defining its visual language, this console epitomizes the refined luxury and architectural purity that characterized Leleu’s celebrated furniture of the era. Exotic wood veneer with gilt bronze details and Art Déco Mirror. Also includes its original chair. The piece features a rectilinear composition softened by subtle curvature, resting on tapered supports joined by an elegant stretcher. Its structure is veneered in a richly figured exotic wood, its luminous surface animated by a deep, warm tone. The top is finished with a beautifully patterned slab, adding a natural contrast to the geometric precision of the design. Gilt bronze accents discreetly highlight key elements, testifying to the artisanal excellence of Leleu’s atelier. Realized in only two known specimens. This console embodies the spirit of the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, in which Leleu was a major exhibitor and laureate. Balancing classic refinement with modern restraint, it stands as a quintessential example of the early French Art Deco movement. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Minor wear and surface patina consistent with age and use; marble top in fine preserved state. Ref. Viviane Jutheau, Jules et André Leleu, Edition Vecteurs, 1989, published full page, p. 82. Prov. "Modernism" Gallery, New York; Private Collection, New York. Jules Leleu (1883–1961) was one of the most influential French furniture designers of the Art Deco period. Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, he trained in the family’s decoration and painting business before establishing Maison Leleu in Paris. He exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and won top honors at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs—the fair that gave “Art Deco” its name. From the mid-1920s through the 1950s, Leleu supplied complete interiors for elite private clients and major public commissions. His atelier furnished embassies and ministries, luxury hotels, and legendary ocean liners (including Île-de-France and Normandie). Alongside Ruhlmann, Follot, and Sue-et-Mare, Leleu defined the French Art Deco ideal: calm, impeccably proportioned luxury rather than ostentatious display. His furniture is renowned for superb materials (exotic veneers, parchment, shagreen), flawless construction, and a restrained, architectural line that feels modern yet timeless. Because Maison Leleu delivered complete décors, his pieces are deeply considered in use—comfortable, durable, and elegant—making them particularly desirable to collectors and interior designers today.
