About the Item
Kindel Winterthur Collection Mahogany Goddard Townsend Blockfront Secretary Writing Desk. Made from mahogany with a high sheen finish. This exception example of a late 18th century piece features an ornately scalloped slant front over three graduated dovetailed drawers with solid brass batwing hardware. The dropfront opens to 17 additional drawers and pigeon holes. The hand carved secretary is supported by bracket feet.
The original was made for the Updyke family in the 1770s, crafted by the Townsend and Goddard families of Kingston and Newport, Rhode Island. Only ten of these 18th Century chest were made and most remain in museums. One sold to a private collection in 1989 for $12.1 million.
