About the Item

Design details indicate that this secretary was made at the end of the Biedermeier period as interest in historical periods bloomed. The uppermost drawer is curved in the classic Biedermeier/Louis Philippe design, favored between 1830-1860, as does the raised display platform resting on the top surface of the piece. The choice of carefully selected French walnut veneers both on the drop-front and the writing surface are decidedly a salute to the Renaissance and its burgeoning revival. This is a fascinating piece of design history. Original locks and keys are fully functional, while the pulls and escutcheons appear to have been replaced for ease of use, not requiring a key.
