Tom Richards Trunk Secretary Cabinet Desk, Polished Aluminum, Timothy Oulton, UK. After seemingly circling the globe, a canvas-clad steamer trunk landed at a famed European antiques market. It was battered and worn, but its careful construction and handsome detailing marked it as bespoke luggage, crafted in early 20th-century England for a traveler of discerning taste (a traveler whose name – according to the brass plate mounted above the latch – was Tom Richards). Plucked from potential obscurity, the trunk made its way to the workshop of Timothy Oulton (1967 – 3 March 2022), where it was painstakingly dismantled – every pin removed and measured, every hinge and brace scrutinized. And from that well-made, well-traveled trunk, the Tom Richards collection was born. This polished aluminum version was inspired by the gleaming nose cones and fuselages of mid-20th-century aircraft, clad in a patchwork of polished aluminum panels accented with exposed steel screws. This piece appears to have been in production (available to order at certain Restoration hardware locations) c. 2009. The Tom Richards collection became a hallmark of Oulton’s oeuvre as it was his first foreray into his signature ‘aviator’ style of metal clad, hand-built casegoods. Each Tom Richards piece was constructed in precisely the same manner as the original and was aged to look as if it's seen epic journeys of its own Wood frames are clad in polished aluminum, accented with steel screws Braced with strips of aged solid wood trimmed with antiqued brass, Fitted with aged leather handles and corner protectors, equipped with brass luggage latches and a canvas lined interior Aluminum has a semi-matte finish that's distressed for a vintage look; intentional nicks, dings, small scratches and other imperfections are to be expected and add to the character and uniqueness of each item 30"W x 40¼"D x 77¼"H

A fine, elegant, antique Austrian mahogany Biedermeier secretary desk cabinet, circa 1820. The cabinet in two sections, the top with a curved architectural pediment, below is a curved door tabernacle cupboard, flanked by a pair of columns with gilt bronze bases and capitals. The base with a series of four graduated drawers with shield shaped lock-plate escutcheons inlaid with bone, to the center is a fall front writing surface enclosing a fitted interior with a series of drawers, pigeon holes and a central locking door, the doors and drawers are inlaid with satinwood stringing.
