About the Item
Fantastic 20th century Italian lacquered secretary bookcase decorated in the Venetian taste with dramatic Chinoiserie motifs. The two-part case has an intentionally distressed painted finish to mimic age. The top of the bookcase has a split pediment with a cornice molding. The cabinet is fronted by two locking doors opening to a shelved interior. The bottom case has a slant or fall front secretaire desk with a large writing table and fitted drawers with cubbies for storage. Below the desk are three large storage drawers with patinated brass pulls and mahogany interiors. The entire piece is embellished with floral reserves in parcel gilt. The scenes include mythical birds and floral sprays in the orientalism aesthetic. The paintings have intricate details with dramatic gilt over a distressed cream painted background that provides a romantic light-filled palette. The original locking key is provided. The case is heavy and solid with excellent joinery and craftsmanship.

Fantastic late 19th century Italian secretaire cabinet or bookcase made in the Venetian Rococo taste. Crafted from walnut the two-part case features a speckled lacquer finish centered by a cartouche shaped window with a painted bust by artist Ira Yeager (American 1938-2022). The bureau cabinet has a bombe shaped dresser base with a drop front diminutive writing table. The drop front has two storage drawers and a small pigeon hole storage above. Below the desk are two small drawers and two large storage drawers with rocaille patinated brass pulls. The dresser is supported by small cabriole legs with scrolled feet. The dresser is surmounted by a bookcase with a painted door depicting a nobleman holding a chicken. The painting is painted on board titled "Venezia" and signed by Yeager with a fictitious date of 1725. The door opens to a three-shelf bookcase.
