Explorer Cabinet Small by Jaime Hayon for BD Barcelona The sinuous and elegant Explorer cabinet comes with space-age curves, functional storage and rich colours. Hayon wants furniture to fit in a home on a near-personal level. The smooth lines and playful colour are inspired by a conventional hot dog. This humour balances with the structure’s modularity, complimenting a room while remaining functional and visually unique. The Explorer cabinet is hand-finished with the same durable and elegant high gloss lacquer used on pianos. The cabinet is detachable and can be easily transported, but its body stands out with an astral quality. It hovers over its wooden legs, simmering in colourful curves and a brilliant gloss. Its elegance is out of this world, nearly. Materials and finishes Cupboards, doors and drawers in MDF. Exterior lacquered in gloss finish and interior lacquered in matte finish. Legs in solid alder wood lacquered in gloss finish. Horizontal shelves and vertical bracket supports in MDF with lacquered gloss finish. Interior drawer units in MDF with lacquered matte finish. The wood used in this product is FSC™ C216213 certified. Hayon's work embodies his distinct perspective on the world — a whimsical yet insightful exploration of the human psyche. Like a 21st-century archaeologist, he examines and excavates recurrent themes of diversity, metamorphosis, and hybridisation to create a visual language that is accessible, intriguing, and instantly identifiable as Hayon. His relationship with materials, notably marble, stone, glass, wood and ceramics, is integral to this language, taking a visceral and intuitive approach to colour and technique. With a career spanning over 25 years, Hayon has continuously refined his aesthetic across diverse disciplines, with his body of work standing as a testament to his unwavering curiosity and commitment to artistic evolution and innovation. About the manufacturer: BD has been around for over half a century. It was founded in a nightclub in 1972 by a bunch of young architects and designers from Barcelona. They broke into the design world with a new vision: to produce and market their designs, and the designs of their friends with complete creative freedom and design criteria. Beginning with the designs of contemporaries like Ettore Sottsass, Rennie Mackintosh and Álvaro Siza, BD provoked a curiosity about design. These early pieces helped bring international recognition to the country’s design scene, and many of them still exist today. They are an international design company run by a collective ownership —Apartamento Magazine (Nacho Alegre, Omar Sosa, Marco Velardi), Taller Bofill (Pablo Bofill, Ricardo Bofill, Luna Paiva, Hernán Cortés, Fernando de la Mata), and Igor Urdampilleta from Arquitectura-G— all architects, publishers and designers. Along with one of the founders, Oscar Tusquets, this group fosters the same nonconformist spirit BD has had since its beginnings. Their independence as a company fuels their intentions and supports this purpose. BD are now expanding their design dialogue to delve into diverse realms of creativity, in design and in everything they do.
