About the Item

This Japanese vintage slatted shelf was crafted in the early Showa period (circa 1930) from Hinoki (Japanese cypress). Its distinctive back panel with vertical slats gives the piece a rhythmic, architectural presence while maintaining a sense of openness and balance. The most intriguing detail lies on the shelves themselves — circular marks left by urushi lacquer containers. These traces reveal that this shelf was once used by a craftsman who worked with lacquer in their craft — perhaps a fishing tackle maker or similar artisan — where containers of lacquer were placed during the work process. The random placement of these rings creates an unintentional abstract pattern, adding depth and individuality to the piece. Interestingly, the marks are relatively few for a craftsman's shelf, suggesting it may not have been used extensively before completing its working life. Ideal for displaying books, ceramics, or small collections, this shelf brings together utility and artistry. The honey-toned hinoki wood has matured into a warm, gentle color, and the simple construction embodies the understated beauty of wabi-sabi. Cleaned gently with water only. As a vintage piece, minor scratches and marks may be present, each adding to its unique charm and the story it tells over time. It has been carefully inspected and remains in excellent vintage condition, with natural signs of age that enhance its character. The interior dimensions are as follows (in inches, with centimeters in parentheses): W33.5" × D10.3" × H7.2" / 8.3" / 9.5" (85.0 × 26.2 × 18.2 / 21.2 / 24.2 cm) Weight: 24.9 lbs (11.3 kg) Shipping Information We ship from Japan.
