About the Item

One Postmodern shelf „Verspanntes Regal“ designed by Wolfgang Laubersheimer for Pentagon Group in 1984. early edition of the 'Verspanntes Regal', therefore without makers bedge or creators mark. The five members of the Pentagon Group were the most recognized protagonists of the movement that became known as "Neues Deutsches Design" throughout the 1980ies and 1990ies. Turning towards an artistic design practice Pentagon realized and self-produced several unique design objects and furniture made from rather unusual or experimental material. Their pieces‘ appearance is rough and heavy with a great silence presence. The use and combination of materials in their design practice added a new attitude to postmodern furniture reflecting on everyday culture itself. Seeking political meaning and a critique of mass culture many of the pieces were self-produced and realized in low quantities. The heaviness and roughness and the steel patina on the surface goes along with the sincerely thought through formgiving to stabilize the entire shelf, that contrasts the heaviness of the steel. The braced shelf became the great success and one of the icons of the era while most other Pentagon furniture were realized in low quantities only.
