About the Item

An elegant and highly functional modular "Tehora" wall shelving system designed by Olli Mannermaa, Finland, in the 1950s. The unit combines three slender black lacquered metal uprights with 10 warm wooden shelves, creating a light yet architectural expression characteristic of Finnish postwar modernism. The open construction and refined proportions allow the shelving to function equally well as a bookcase, display unit, or room-defining wall system. Two shelves are deeper and one of them is meant as a tilted display unit for magazines or other items. The other shelves are 25cm each. The shelving system is fully modular and easily assembled or disassembled, allowing the shelves to be positioned according to need. The vertical metal uprights are fitted with height-adjustable feet to accommodate uneven floors, while the top of each upright features a slot for wall fixation, ensuring stability when installed. The thoughtful engineering reflects a design philosophy where flexibility and everyday practicality are central. Olli Mannermaa was a Finnish designer active in the postwar period, known for his rational and quietly elegant approach to furniture and interior systems. His work often focused on modularity, adaptability, and functionality, aligning with the ideals of Finnish modernism in the 1950s. His designs are characterized by clean lines, light structures, and a balanced use of materials. He designed one of the most iconic and arguably one of the most produced chair in Finland, the Kilts chair. This unit remains in good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use, most notably minor patina and surface wear to the metal uprights. The wooden shelves show light signs of use. All wear is purely cosmetic and contributes to the authentic vintage character of the piece. Structurally sound and ready for use.
