About the Item
Rare Anglo-Indian Painted Pagoda with Original Miniature-Decorated Stand, circa 1920–1950, Consisting of Two Pieces: the Pagoda and the Stand
An extraordinary Anglo-Indian stacking étagère in the form of a five-foot pagoda, blending Chinese architectural influence with Indian artistry. Comprised of multiple graduated octagonal tiers, each section can be used independently as a side or display table or stacked to form a monumental pagoda crowned with a lotus-bud finial.
The structure is framed in dark lacquered wood with bamboo-motif turnings, the panels inset with finely woven cane. The rims, eaves, and roof elements are clad in wrapped and bound embossed metal sheeting, tooled with swirling foliate patterns and striped edge trim—a striking detail that adds both shimmer and durability. The base is raised on cylindrical legs decorated with gilt floral motifs, a subtle Anglo-Indian flourish.
This rare Anglo-Indian pagoda with its original painted stand exemplifies the cross-cultural design sensibilities of the early 20th century, blending Chinese architectural forms with the artistry of Indian miniature painting.
The pagoda itself rises in elegant tiered form, pierced with arcades and crowned by a finial, recalling traditional Chinese models while executed in a light bleached finish typical of colonial-era decorative arts. It stands upon an octagonal painted stand, uniquely adorned with a romantic Mughal-inspired miniature scene depicting a princely couple in a moonlit garden—an exquisite contrast of architectural form and narrative painting.
Dating to circa 1920–1950, the work reflects the hybrid aesthetics of Anglo-Indian export art, designed to appeal to European and colonial patrons while celebrating local craftsmanship. The survival of both the pagoda and its original decorated base as a unified ensemble is highly unusual, greatly enhancing rarity and desirability.
This piece makes a striking statement for collectors of Anglo-Indian and cross-cultural decorative arts, as well as for design-forward interiors.
