Robert Heal for Staples, 1964 'Ladderax' shelving system Two bay system with eight wooden shelves (each with two recessed metal supports), three metal uprights (two end uprights and one central upright) and two metal diagonal-braces. The shelves can be fitted in any configuration on the 'ladder' ends. A very elegant, midcentury shelving system. The concept is similar to the 'String' system by Nisse Strinning and Kajsa Strinning. It would make a fantastic addition to a European midcentury themed modern interior. It works well together with the work of European and Scandinavian designers such as Alvar Allto, Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen and Marcel Breuer. This is quite an unusual unit, it uses the more elegant narrower components (20.5 cm / 8 inch shelf depth), so really is more functional in the modern interior. Also worth noting is the rare central ladder element, this has the same external dimension as the end ladder elements, but uses thinner metal profiles. The overall impression is very good, and the shelves are all nice and solid, but please note that there are various age-related small knocks and bumps and scratches to the wood and some general marks to the metal. Two of the shelves have slightly different supports, you don't generally notice this much, but in the photos you can just see that the end hooks of the bottom shelves are slightly different to the rest. The dimensions are the same though. This is just temporarily set up for the photos, and we fixed back against the wall with just two screws. When fully assembled, the whole thing stands quite stabile, but for normal use should really be fixed back against the wall. It does need a bit of patience to properly assemble, and to align everything. Dimensions approximate: Width 185.5 cm, depth 20.5 cm, height 132.5 cm Weight: 18.8 kg.
