About the Item
Pair of freestanding rosewood units model "Archimede" realized by Hirozi Fukuoh for Gavina in 1960.
Solid and veneered rosewood, lacquered metal supports.
Two modular freestanding units, each composed of an upper open bookcase and a lower storage section with sliding doors.
Elegant and rare pair of Archimede modular bookcase systems designed by Hirozi Fukuoh for Gavina in the 1960s.
This sophisticated system exemplifies Gavina’s approach to refined, architectural minimalism—intelligent in structure, understated in presence, and exceptional in craftsmanship.
Each piece is composed of two stacked modules, forming tall vertical units supported by the series’ signature cylindrical corner posts in dark-lacquered metal. These posts act as both a visual frame and a structural spine, allowing the elements to be vertically combined without visible hardware, resulting in an unusually airy and elegant silhouette.
The upper sections offer open bookshelves with adjustable shelves, ideal for books, ceramics, or sculptural pieces.
The lower sections consist of storage cabinets with sliding doors, revealing additional shelving. The rosewood fronts display beautifully figured grain and subtle tonal variation.
A distinctive design detail of the Archimede system is the gentle concave and convex shaping where the horizontal boards meet the vertical posts—softening the rectilinear form and showcasing careful woodworking rarely seen in modular furniture of the era.
As a pair, the units form a striking architectural ensemble; they may also be separated and used individually.
Very good vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with the 1960s.
Some minor scratches, small marks, and touch-ups visible on close inspection, including a mark inside one shelf (documented in photos).
The rosewood surfaces present well with a warm, even finish. Structure is solid; sliding doors run smoothly.
