About the Item

This remarkable French Art Deco sideboard from the 1930s showcases the sophisticated materiality and refined geometry that defined the era’s most exclusive furniture. The body is clad in richly figured Macassar, its striking grain flowing seamlessly around softly rounded corners. A deep, mirror-like high-gloss finish brings out the wood’s natural depth and gives the piece a sculptural presence. At the centre, a subtly curved section creates a clever visual effect: what appears to be a stack of three drawers is in fact a continuous compartment concealed behind a unified front, complemented by a discreet drawer above. The two outer doors open to spacious storage with shelves, finished in light maple to contrast beautifully with the dark exterior. The top combines two slabs of genuine Portoro marble with a central band of continuous Macassar. Portoro, with its dramatic black ground and golden veining, was one of the most prized marbles of the Art Deco period and adds a luxurious architectural weight to the composition. Original chrome-plated hardware reinforces the piece’s French Art Deco lineage, combining precise geometry with elegant clarity. The recessed plinth base visually lifts the two-metre-wide structure and gives it an unexpectedly light, floating appearance. Expertly restored and finished to a flawless gloss, this sideboard is an exceptional representation of French Art Deco craftsmanship. Dimensions: Width 200 cm (78.74 in), height 107 cm (42.13 in), overall depth 53 cm (20.87 in). Depth inside the side doors: 50 cm (19.69 in).

French Art Deco Sideboard with Floral Marquetry and Inward-Curved Front, 1930s
Located in Ulm, DE
This exquisite Art Deco sideboard from France, dating to the 1930s, is a masterwork of early 20th-century decorative arts — striking in both silhouette and craftsmanship. Its inwardly curved front sets it apart: a sculptural gesture that draws the gaze to its center, where a breathtaking marquetry medallion in warm-toned fruitwoods unfurls like a blooming bouquet. Accents in polished brass punctuate the composition with refined brilliance. Crafted from a symphony of richly grained woods, the surface shimmers under a lustrous, hand-polished French shellac finish, applied in the traditional manner to enhance depth and clarity. The sideboard rests on a sleek, black lacquered plinth that subtly contrasts the warmth of the wood and reinforces its architectural presence. Behind four doors — framed by veneered sunburst patterns that radiate from the center — lie generous storage compartments, beautifully finished inside and perfectly suited for dining essentials, collectibles, or even media equipment. The dimensions of this statement piece — 190 cm (74.8”) wide, 97.5 cm (38.4”) high, and 46 cm (18.1”) deep — make it a commanding yet elegant presence in both classic and contemporary interiors. Whether used as a buffet in a dining room, a console in an entryway, or a stylish bar or media cabinet, this original 1930s Art Deco commode...
