About the Item

A Rare Mid-Century Modern Eight-Drawer Credenza in Solid Tasmanian Myrtle by Fred Lowen for Fler, Australia, 1958 A truly exceptional eight-drawer credenza by Fred Lowen, one of the foundational figures of Australian modernism. Designed in 1958, this piece hails from the golden era of Lowen's work at Fler, the studio that defined the sophisticated 'Scandi-Pacific' aesthetic. The credenza's clean, architectural lines are rendered in solid Tasmanian Myrtle, an exotic and prized hardwood celebrated for its warm, reddish-pink hue and remarkable satiny lustre. This substantial piece offers generous storage across eight drawers, making it a versatile sideboard, dresser, or media console. The drawers, constructed with fine dovetail joints, feature a signature sculptural detail: solid brass cylinder pulls, each set within a precisely dished-in concave cutout. This thoughtful detail creates a beautiful play of light and shadow on the timber's surface. As a final mark of bespoke quality, each drawer opens to reveal a vibrant, jewel-toned teal felt lining—a private, tactile luxury that contrasts beautifully with the warm timber. Offered in excellent restored condition, this credenza has been beautifully preserved, with a warm, honeyed Shellac finish that highlights the timber's fine, uniform grain.
