About the Item

This provincial coffer from northern China has a simple, clean-lined form and a striking finish of dark lacquer. Dated to the mid-19th century, the cabinet is crafted of northern elm (yumu) using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, without the use of nails or screws. The square-corner coffer is ideal today as a sideboard or credenza, and features four upper drawers and three sets of doors that open to a continuous interior fitted with a single shelf. The minimal design is simple and timeless, softened by a rich patina and light wear along the corners.
