Early 20th Century Oak Gothic Revival Sideboard

About the Item

A late 19th century or early 20th century one of a kind gothic revival sideboard from a church made of solid oak. Stripped and sanded of the old wax, revealing the beautiful surface and texture of the natural oak wood. Half-height corpus with rectangular ground plan standing on 5 turned feet. Artfully carved openwork front with 3 doors, a total of 5 drawers and fluted pilaster strips under a slightly protruding profiled top. The sides are coffered and decorated with Gothic blind tracery. Framed doors hung on large external brass fittings with openwork carved panels in the form of Gothic tracery windows with rose windows. On the central door there is also a carved relief picture. It depicts the old Christian motif of the pelican, which has opened its breast with its beak and is feeding its young in the nest with the blood flowing down. Below it is a banner with "PIE PELICANE", Latin for pelican feeding. To this day, the pelican motif, found mainly in early Christian art and in the Middle Ages, stands as a symbol of Christ's death sacrifice and resurrection and can be interpreted here as illustrating the symbolic reference to the Eucharist. * Exceptional unusual opening mechanism of the central door. With the help of a weight on a rope in the cabinet, it can be pulled open and closed (see video and pictures). There is one large shelf inside. Original brass handles on the drawers. Dimensions: 110.5 cm high / 43.5 inch high, 245 cm wide / 96.45 inch wide, 51 cm deep / 20.07 inch deep. Shelf height: 29,5 or 31,5 cm / 11.61 inch or 12.4 inch. Depth inside: 37 cm / 14.56 inch. A Gothic Revival reliquary. Circa late 19th / early 20th century. Made of solid oak with fine carving. Reliquaries have been used to store relics since the Middle Ages. In sacred architecture they are often located behind the main altar in the chancel. In addition to classical, often church-like caskets, anthropomorphic, so-called "speaking" reliquaries were also made, which already inform the viewer about their contents through their own design. Mostly they were made of precious metals and decorated with rich sculptural ornaments or precious stones. One of the most famous examples of reliquaries is the Epiphany shrine of Nicholas of Verdun from the late 12th or early 13th century in Cologne Cathedral. The reliquary offered here has an architectural structure with a rectangular ground plan. The three-sided glazed box with a dormer roof rests on a plinth.
