Brutalist Sideboard Oak, France, 1950s
By Charles Dudouyt

This sculptural sideboard holds a quiet monumentality—its façade a study in balance, depth, and geometric relief. Two symmetrical doors are adorned with deeply carved concentric medallions, each centered within a bevel-edged square that projects from the surface like a wooden echo. Carved from solid oak, the cabinet is grounded by splayed bracket legs that introduce a subtle kinetic lift. Their flared stance balances the robust body above, suggesting movement held in suspension. The drawer pulls are brass discs, minimal in gesture yet warm in tone, allowing the sculptural surfaces to speak.
Inside, the cabinet offers generous storage behind paneled doors, while the drawers glide with dovetail construction and timeworn ease. A visible fissure on one of the door medallions...
