About the Item

Crafted in France in the 1960s, this low sideboard is a striking study in material rhythm and sculptural restraint. Vertical runs of hand‑split pencil reed cloak the pine case—top, sides, drawers, and doors—creating a unified, textural skin in warm ochre tones. The stepped arrangement of three drawers and central double doors introduces a graphic cadence, punctuated by patinated steel escutcheons and curved pulls—gestures that nod unmistakably to the design language of Audoux‑Minet. The forged-iron sled base anchors the form, its industrial lines providing a sharp counterpoint to the organic reed surface. Rustic yet architectural, the piece reflects a uniquely French postwar sensibility—where artisanal craft meets modernist volume. Condition: Good vintage condition with visible wear and patina throughout. Surface wear is most prominent at the center of the top, including fading, finish loss, and a few scattered marks. Rattan detailing shows aging and irregularities, with some splits and minor losses. The blackened iron base is structurally sound and stable, with patina and oxidation consistent with age. All drawers and cabinet doors open and close smoothly.
