About the Item
A prow of polished wood and brass — domestic architecture at the scale of furniture.
This striking sideboard channels the daring spirit of Gio Ponti, where cabinetry becomes a small piece of architecture rather than a mere container. The case is subtly trapezoidal in profile, its flanks splayed like the hull of a ship, giving the front an almost cinematic perspective.
Clad in a continuous skin of high-gloss Macassar-style veneer, the façade reads as a dark, rippling horizon line, the grain running horizontally to emphasize length and motion. Four discreet doors are barely registered by fine vertical joints and diminutive square brass pulls, preserving the purity of the plane.
The base is where the piece becomes overtly Pontian: a faceted central plinth, configured as an inverted pyramid, appears to slice into the underside of the cabinet, creating a dynamic tension between mass and balance. At the extremities, slender tapered legs with brass sabots complete the illusion of a volume hovering lightly above the floor, more prow than pedestal.
Inside, the sideboard offers generous, rationally organized storage for tableware, bar service or media components, its functional clarity underscoring the modernist ethos behind the sculptural exterior. The finish presents with a deep, even lustre, showing only minor signs of age consistent with careful use; edges and brass details retain their crispness.
A piece that sits comfortably alongside the great Italian mid-century names, this sideboard brings Gio Ponti’s love of geometry, perspective and luxurious surfaces into a single, commanding form.
