About the Item
Joseph Savina, sideboard, oak, wrought iron, France, 1950s
Designed by the Frenchman Joseph Savina, this cabinet is a testament to exquisite craftsmanship and profound artistry. The corpus is solidly built marked by distinct geometrical elements with a clear, defined structure. The doorpanels embrace a very detailed and complex relief composition of carved lines and undulating shapes, exemplifying the intricate craftsmanship and deep understanding of sculptural woodworking. The interior houses ample of storage space with shelves and drawers structuring the interior. Its decorative execution of ornamental arrangements, premium material use, and refined woodwork, are all hallmarks for which Savina is celebrated.
Joseph Savina (1901-1983), a skilled Breton cabinetmaker and sculptor, was an integral member of the Seiz Breur art movement, heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. He emerged as the principal woodworker within this group and established a workshop 'Atelier d’Art Celtique' in Tréguier, France. Notably, he maintained a close friendship and collaboration with the renowned architect Le Corbusier. Le Corbusier entrusted Savina to produce some of his sculptures, a testament to Savina's remarkable skill in reinventing regional furniture with a radical modern approach. Their initial meeting in 1935 marked the beginning of a lasting friendship founded on mutual respect and admiration. The two artists frequently exchanged ideas, with Corbusier particularly admiring the "sense of plasticity" present in Savina's work. Savina also brought to life carvings based on Corbusier's drawings.
