About the Item

A fine handcrafted reproduction from the one of the most well respected and prolific firms of the first half of the 20th Century, this sideboard is an excellent representation of what they were capable of producing. The beautiful solid mahogany and mahogany veneers are stained dark with the color very well preserved throughout, the serpentine top conforming to the curvature of the case and only projecting softly over all three sides. Two cabinet doors bracket a single drawer over a smaller double-doored cabinet, each cabinet space divided by a shelf through the center. The drawer is neatly divided for silverware, retaining an early green felt that remains in good condition; the drawer is branded on the right side and with a placard on the left noting it's craftsmanship by Potthast. It is hand dovetailed at all four corners in the manner of their earlier pieces. The inlay work throughout the front is simply remarkable, each precisely cut and handsomely colored; the legs are each topped by bookend inlays of alternating light and dark wood over bold ovular pateras. The cabinet doors feature complicated fan inlaid spandrels backed against the stringer inlaid borders that frame each door panel. All legs are tapered with a four bellflower inlay decorating a third of the leg length over spade feet. The sideboard retains all original hardware other than the missing lock in the left cabinet door; the sideboard originally had a removable backsplash that is no longer with the case. An exquisite reproduction crafted to exacting standards and in simply gorgeous condition, this is a piece that will certainly be a defining part of any classical dining room. Particularly for collectors passionate about Potthast pieces, which in and of themselves have become quite collectible, this sideboard was crafted to last the test of time and will certainly be a cherished investment in your interior. Measurements: 66" W x 23 7/8" D x 40 1/8" H Condition Report: Stringer inlay loss to rearmost corners of the top on both sides. Top with craquelure to varnish, surface blemishes and a few scratches. Blade above drawer with dings and abrasions (beneath lip of the top); other minor dings and abrasions to surfaces throughout as expected. Left door lock is absent, one working and probably original key retained. Overall with excellent color throughout. Sideboard had a backsplash originally, this now absent.
