Small American Federal Style Inlaid Sideboard Console c. 1890-1910

About the Item

Of particular note in this attractive Centennial reproduction of an American Federal Sideboard is the delightful size - measuring just under 48" in width, it is a wonderful scaled-down example after the originals of a century prior. Throughout the surface, a warm mellowing and patina have developed quite nicely, the result being an overall presentation that is quite above reproach. It is angular with outstanding lines, these accentuated by the fruitwood stringer inlay in each panel and door, bellflowers inlaid above the front two tapered legs. The drawer retains it's first pair of brass knobs, the sides hand dovetailed and the bottom sliding into the sides in routed grooves on either side. It has a wealth of cabinet space, the middle cabinet divided with a single shelf in the interior. This is a fine reproduction for a classical or Federal dining room where space is a challenge and size of furnishings is of important consideration. Well preserved and extremely attractive, this piece allows you to bring early American appeal to the dining room without dominating the space. Measurements: 47 5/8" wide x 17 5/8" deep x 35 3/4" high Condition Report: No key - the right cabinet door swings open when not locked. Light scuffs and dings throughout to the surface: legs with light wear, the top with minor scratches and a darkened area. Repaired crack beside hinge of left-central swinging door, a pair of screws used on the inside to restore this permanently. Slight warp to the right door, not particularly noteworthy. Original hardware throughout; brass keyhole escutcheon missing on right cabinet door. Sturdy, strong and very attractive condition. The original and beautifully worn surface is incredibly lively with a rich texture in the symmetrical brush strokes with the natural rubbing through the paint from over two-hundred years of gentle handling. It is crafted in one piece from pine primary woods and poplar secondary woods and features a nine-light glazed upper door with beautifully molded astragals that opens with a replaced brass knob to reveal an interior divided with two fixed shelves. The lower portion of the cabinet is missing its knob and opens to reveal the single shelf that evenly divides out the space.
