About the Item

Antique Biedermeier pillar or chest of drawers Southern Germany Cherry Biedermeier around 1835 Dimensions: H x W x D: 91 x 70 x 40 cm Description: Cabinet standing on round feet with a high plinth and rounded pilasters. There is a large door opening to the right, the interior is divided by a shelf. There is a lockable drawer above it. The cherry veneer is impressive, not only on the front, but also on the sides and the top panel. A total of ten veneer sheets with an almost identical pattern were used here, which, when mirrored together, create a wonderful grain pattern. There is a handwritten marking on the back panel: H.11. This marking indicates a historical inventory or numbering within a larger stock of furniture. Workshops and transporters labelled pieces of furniture in this way for transport or storage purposes. Interesting facts: Pillar cabinets, such as the one offered here, were popular pieces of furniture in the Biedermeier style of living. With their shallow depth and width, they were ideal for narrow wall surfaces, for example between two windows. In combination with a wall mirror mounted above it, which was often designed to match, the term trumeau cabinet became established. The mirror was functional - to increase light in the room - and served to make small rooms in urban flats appear brighter and larger. Condition: Restored condition with a shellac hand polish. You can find comparable objects in the specialist literature: Rainer Haaff - BiedermeierWelten - Deutschland Donaumonarchie - Neuauflage 2024 From p. 96 Please note that the armchair shown is not included in the price, but is for size comparison purposes only. The armchair is part of a pair, which you can find among my other listings.
