About the Item

An extraordinary 1960s custom commission by Vladimir Kagan, signed with a Vladimir Kagan Designs - New York signature label, and created for the iconic JFK TWA Flight Center (designed by Eero Saarinen), this unique and rare hydraulic dry bar / sideboard cabinet captures the glamour and optimism of the Jet Age at its peak. Crafted with Kagan’s unmistakable blend of architectural precision and sculptural refinement, the case features a long, horizontal profile with beautifully figured tigers maple wood grain contrasting against brass detailing over a brass plinth base, presenting as both a sophisticated credenza and a fully functional concealed bar. Two Tambour roll-top doors open to reveal counter top space to mix drinks or store glassware, with pull-out drawers underneath. In the illuminated center compartment which raises via a push of a button, there are 6 bottle holders, a mirrored rear panel, and a glass shelf. Designed to impress at the push of a button, the cabinet operates via a remote-controlled hydraulic mechanism, elevating the center bar compartment upward for effortless serving and dramatic presentation, an ingenious detail that feels as futuristic today as it would have in the original TWA terminal setting. The layout is exceptionally well-considered, with storage designed for bar use, entertaining, and display, making it equally at home in a collector’s interior, a design-forward residence, or a commercial setting such as a gallery, private club, or hospitality installation. Bearing a Kagan Designs label, and being a unique custom commission, this piece represents a rare intersection of American modernism, bespoke craftsmanship, and important architectural provenance. A true statement work for serious collectors of Mid-Century Modern design, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a functional artifact connected to one of the most celebrated interiors of the 20th century. Important Cerused Oak Sideboard by Vladimir Kagan for Kagan-Dreyfuss, Signed
By Vladimir Kagan, Kagan-Dreyfuss, Inc.
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This important piece of design history was not only designed by Vladimir Kagan and handcrafted by Kagan-Dreyfuss in circa 1949 New York... this was also owned by Kagan himself and kept throughout his entire adult life (see provenance notes below). Each of the two pieces (lower credenza and upper dry bar / hutch) are signed on the back with Kagan-Dreyfuss New York stamps. The expansive size provides exceptional storage and use options. Kagan-Dreyfuss (Vladimir Kagan's partnership with Hugo Dreyfuss from circa 1950-1960) stamped pieces are amongst the most sought after by collectors and investors of art and design. Furniture with Kagan-Dreyfuss stamps are extremely hard to find and demand exceptional value, and this credenza with hutch is double stamped (one on each piece). Featuring a cerused oak exterior, with tambour doors on the lower credenza, sculpted handles (which slide to reveal a keyhole, no key is present however can be rekeyed) on the upper hutch...

Caned Sculptural Cabinet by Vladimir Kagan for Grosfeld House, 1950s, Signed
By Grosfeld House, Vladimir Kagan
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This very rare sculptural caned cabinet was designed by Vladimir Kagan and crafted by Grosfeld House during the 1950s in New York, documented in early Grosfeld House advertisements (see photos). Featuring sculpted legs, a caned door (with original unaltered caning in excellent vintage condition) with brass handle, and interior outfitted with two compartments, one side with an adjustable shelf. While the cabinet is small in size, it is huge in personality. Vladimir Kagan's works have been highly valued by collectors and art / design investors, and his earlier works in the 1950s for Grosfeld House and Kagan-Dreyfuss are among the most sought after by 'purist collectors' like myself. Why do I prize his 1950s works above all else? I can write a short book on this, but one easy to explain reason is that this was a period unlike the rest of his career, where items produced in this time are hallmarked within that period - a distinction that his later works lacked. Essentially, everything post the early 60s blended together with the decades thereafter. A novice Kagan collector is content with anything by Kagan, even items produced by Directional and American Leather Company...

VK201 Rosewood Dining Table by Vladimir Kagan for Kagan-Dreyfuss, 1958, Signed
By Kagan-Dreyfuss, Inc., Vladimir Kagan
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This rare and important model #VK-201 sculptured Rosewood and Walnut 'Round Extension Dining Table' by Vladimir Kagan for Kagan-Dreyfuss was designed in 1958, this example produced between 1958 and 1960, during Kagan's partnership with Hugo Dreyfuss which ended in 1960. This rare example is stamped with the Kagan-Dreyfuss branded marks on the underside of the table and under one of the two leaves, and serves as an important early example of this sought-after design, perfect for collectors, art and design investors, and interior designers working on high profile projects. This Model VK-201, described in Kagan's early catalogues as a 'Round Extension Dining Table in walnut with rosewood top' has Kagan's signature gorgeous sculpted legs in solid walnut along with a magnificent vivid-grained Rosewood top. Just look at the closeup photos of the sculpted edges and tailored legs... this table looks more like a sculpture than merely just furniture. Quality of materials and craftsmanship you don't find in todays products - this table is the epitome of the saying 'they don't make them like they used to'. Ultra refinement in this gorgeous collectors piece which extends from a dining or card / game / cafe table seating for four, to a larger dining or meeting table suitable for eight. With no leaves - the table is 48" round and with both leaves extends to 96" while retaining a very nice 48" width. Vladimir Kagan's works have been highly valued by collectors and art / design investors, and his earlier works in the 1950s partnership with Hugo Dreyfuss (Kagan-Dreyfuss from 1950 to 1960) are among the most sought after by 'purist collectors' like myself.
