An exceptional two part highboy in burled walnut veneer, the upper case featuring a molded cornice with hidden drawer surmounting a center shell carved deep drawer flanked by two fitted small drawers on either side, and four graduated long drawers, all with crossbanded herringbone veneered borders and period, possibly original brasses, over a lower case with a single long drawer over three deep drawers, the center of which repeating the shell carving seen above, unusual for a highboy from this period. The carved skirt features two nicely turned drops, all supported by four slender cabriole legs terminating with pad feet. Massachusetts in origin, probably Boston, dating to the 1730’s, in very good overall condition, with minor veneer shrinkage cracks, minor restorations, minor losses, and light wear commensurate with age and use.
Provenance: Purchased from Shreve, Crump & Low in NY, with a copy of a 1947 letter acknowledging the Boston area origin and commission of this piece by the Pratt Family and reads as follows:
“The known history of ownership of the walnut highboy dates from the 18th century and Lt. Samuel Pratt and his wife, Elizabeth Pratt, who lived in Chelsea in the section known at that time as Prattville. The Pratt family, for whom the area was named, had been in this country since the 17th century. Mr. Mather, while President of Harvard College, stayed at the Pratt home in Chelsea in 1688 while on the way to see King James II of England for the purpose of bringing back into power the theocratic democracy of the Church of England.
During the Revolution, part of Washington’s forces stayed in Prattville, and Washington stayed at the Pratt home. It is known that he ate some of his meals there. Once the British broke into the Pratt house and looted some things, including a scarce bowl which was hidden in the wall of the fireplace.
The son of Lt. Samuel Pratt was also a lieutenant in the American forces and named Samuel. During the Revolution, he was in charge of the stock of arms and ammunition, which each town kept on hand for any emergency; and he carried hay to Boston, where is was used to reduce the noise of the Boston Tea Party...

Louis XV credenza dresser sideboard in white bronze was designed by the renowned designer Paul Mathieu. He created this credenza dresser sideboard which is a more feminine version of Louis XV (1730-1760) furniture. This credenza dresser features the characteristic cabriole leg, curving outward at the knee and inward towards the foot in an "S" shape which was born during this period. It is during the same era that English furniture makers produced the Queen Anne and Chippendale styles.
The curved legs and side rails of this exceptionally elegant Louis XV credenza dresser sideboard are hand carved from solid pieces of teak. Pattern makers trace and cut complex forms that will cover the credenza dresser sideboard from thick sheets of copper or silver. Once the credenza dresser sideboard is joined together, it is meticulously encased in a tight-fitting skin of copper or purest silver. The silver used was assayed at 96% purity, which exceeds the minimum standard for sterling of 92.5%. Brass, White Bronze, Antiqued bronze, Silver and Copper are the available options for the metal skin. Both silver and copper will tarnish over time. Regular non-abrasive household metal polishes can be used to restore the original finish.

Constructed in a strongly grained olivewood and dressed with gold brass inlays and an etched and engraved brass panel; rising from a plinth base, the lockable single door having an inset panel in the manner of Jean Berain, enclosing a shelved interior, and flanked by narrow vertical conforming panels; the apron being dressed with three bronze rosettes, and the Jura Jaune marble is dressed with a three quarter arcaded brass gallery,

The cabinet is illustrated and discussed in Christopher Payne’s “British Furniture 1820 to 1920” published in 2023. Payne singles out the rarity of the olivewood timber used as well as the necessity for hand cutting the large marquetry panel.

Recorded in the 'Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840', published by the Furniture History Society, as being situated at 103 New Bond Street between 1830 and 1840, and apart from being manufacturers of furniture, also dealt in 'curiosities and antiques'. The late renowned connoisseur Christopher Gilbert records in his 'Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture' London 1997, also published by the Furniture History Society, a writing table in the Transitional manner with similar plaques. Their label reads 'Town and Emanuel, manufacturers of Buhl Marquetrie, Resner (sic) & Carved Furniture, tripods, screens & c. of the finest and most superb designs of the Louis 14th. An extraordinary 19th century Qing dynasty 4-door vermillion cabinet with fine works of carving, painting, gilding and silvering. The solid wood construction consists of four frame members joined by tenons and mortises. The top and the main body connects through a decorative waist with carved begonias. Two center doors on dowels carved with the He-He Harmony Gods on the caps and two side doors operated by wood pegs on the frames. The top section of the doors feature three-dimensional carvings of noblewomen enjoying a garden. Fine depiction of architectural elements such as columns, fences, pavilion and stone flooring, as well as furniture, plants, and decorative objects. Both gilding and silvering are used to highlight the figures and to give more depth to the surroundings. Below the carvings are four oval medallions with carved poems, expressing joy in the spring season for renewed good fortune and prosperity. The beaded ovals are surrounded by elaborate scrolls of relief carvings in the "longevity" motif. Immediately under the oval sections are a set of 4 carved panels featuring birds on peonies and chrysanthemums. Further down, four octagonal panels with paintings of cranes...
